It is still a popular pastime to pit opera performances on film against their(supposedly)'more reward-ing'purely audio equivalents on records or compact discs:one would in the end, according to this view-point, be better off with on excellent studio recording of the work in question, immersing oneself in the score as one listens, and making do with the scenic visualization conjured up in one's own head. And yet it is precisely the thoughts of another person about this or that work, this or that character, that so fascinates us. In other words, we want to see the piece through the eyes of a professional director.
